Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about booking your visit, our services and what to expect from your care.

How do I book an appointment?

Visit our bookings page or contact your preferred branch by phone or WhatsApp. Our team will help you arrange your visit and confirm availability.

Will an abortion affect my ability to have children in the future?

An uncomplicated medical or surgical abortion does not usually affect your fertility or your ability to have a healthy pregnancy in the future.

Rare complications, such as an untreated infection or injury to the uterus, can affect fertility. Following your aftercare instructions and seeking help promptly for severe or worsening pain, fever, unusual discharge or very heavy bleeding helps protect your health.

How painful is an abortion?

Pain varies from person to person and depends on the method used and how far along the pregnancy is. We provide pain relief and support to help you stay as comfortable as possible.

Medical abortion: The medication causes the uterus to contract, so you can expect cramps that may be stronger than period pain. Cramping is usually most intense while the pregnancy passes, then gradually eases. Some people experience significant pain.

Surgical abortion: You may feel pressure and cramping during a suction procedure. Pain relief and local anaesthetic can help reduce discomfort. Your clinician will explain what to expect and the pain-control options available.

After either method, cramps may continue for a few days and should gradually improve. Severe or worsening pain, pain that does not improve with the recommended medication, or pain with fever, fainting or very heavy bleeding requires urgent medical assessment. Contact the clinic or go to your nearest emergency department.

What is the difference between medical and surgical abortion?

Both methods end a pregnancy. The main difference is how the pregnancy is removed and what you experience during treatment.

Medical abortion — using medication

Medical abortion uses prescribed medicines to make the uterus contract and pass the pregnancy through the vagina. Treatment may use mifepristone followed by misoprostol, or misoprostol alone.

You can expect cramping, bleeding and clots as the pregnancy passes. The strongest symptoms usually occur over several hours, but the timing varies, and bleeding may continue afterwards. Depending on your pregnancy stage and clinical assessment, treatment may take place at home with instructions and support, or in a healthcare facility. Occasionally, additional medication or a suction procedure is needed to complete the abortion.

Surgical abortion — a procedure performed by a clinician

In early pregnancy, surgical abortion usually uses gentle suction through a small tube passed through the cervix to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. There is no cut on your abdomen. At later stages, a different procedure may be needed.

An early suction procedure usually takes around 5–10 minutes, although preparation and recovery make the total visit longer. Pain relief is provided, and the clinician will explain the anaesthetic options available. Most patients can go home the same day after assessment. Cramping and bleeding can still occur afterwards.

Which branches can I visit?

We have branches in Braamfontein, Marshalltown and Midrand. Contact your chosen branch before visiting to confirm appointment availability and whether your required service is offered there.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Ask our team whether your appointment requires any specific preparation. Have details of your current medication, allergies and relevant medical history available. If you plan to use medical aid, confirm the required documents and authorisation beforehand.

Follow the clinic’s instructions about eating, drinking, medication and transport arrangements for your particular visit.

Will my visit be confidential?

Confidentiality, privacy and dignity are central to our care. If you have concerns about how we contact you or handle your information, discuss them with our team before your appointment. They can explain how confidentiality applies to your situation.

What happens during my first consultation?

Your healthcare provider will discuss your concerns and relevant health history, assess your needs and explain suitable options. Any recommended examinations, scans or tests will be discussed with you, along with your treatment plan and applicable fees.

What abortion care options do you offer?

Our listed packages include medical abortion for 0–9 weeks and surgical abortion services up to 20 weeks. Your healthcare provider will assess your pregnancy duration, discuss your options and confirm suitable treatment and fees.

For medical abortion, your provider will explain how to take your prescribed medication and what to expect during treatment.

How are procedures requiring admission arranged?

Procedures requiring admission are offered at our Braamfontein and Midrand branches on Fridays, following a prior assessment on Thursday. Book your Thursday assessment in advance. Friday admission is confirmed after assessment.

Where applicable, the R3,000 admission fee is included in the totals shown in our Fees & Packages section.

Will I need a follow-up visit?

Your healthcare provider will explain your follow-up needs and our team will help arrange the appointment. Follow-up scans cost R800 and are charged separately from the medical abortion packages.

The team will explain your aftercare instructions and confirm any additional treatment costs.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, card, Payflex and most medical aids. Contact our team before your appointment to confirm medical aid acceptance, cover for your chosen service, authorisation requirements and any shortfall.

Are there any additional charges?

Some services are charged separately, including follow-up scans and additional care where required. Our Fees & Packages section lists these charges. Your healthcare provider will confirm your treatment plan and explain any applicable additional costs after assessment.

INFORMATION & SUPPORT

Supporting you before and after your visit

Prepare for your appointment, understand your follow-up care and explore helpful women’s health resources.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

Preparing for your appointment

Consultation & women’s health checks

Have details of your symptoms, current medication, allergies and relevant medical history available. Bring previous test results if you have them, and write down any questions you would like to discuss.

Ultrasound scans & pregnancy assessments

Ask the clinic whether your particular scan requires a full bladder or any other preparation. If known, have the date of your last menstrual period and any previous pregnancy scan results available.

Abortion care & procedures

Your provider will assess your pregnancy duration and explain suitable treatment. Confirm any instructions about eating, drinking, medication, transport and support before your visit. Do not fast or change prescribed medication unless instructed.

Procedures requiring admission take place at Braamfontein and Midrand on Fridays, after a Thursday assessment. Book the assessment in advance; admission is confirmed after assessment.

Contraception, screening & fertility visits

Tell the team which service you need when booking. Ask whether your visit or test needs to be scheduled at a particular time in your cycle, and whether any specific preparation is required.

For contraception visits, share your current method and any concerns. For fertility visits, bring relevant results for either partner if available.

AFTER YOUR VISIT

Your aftercare & follow-up

After medical or surgical abortion

Follow the medication and recovery instructions supplied by your healthcare provider. Cramping and bleeding can occur after treatment; your provider will explain what to expect and when to seek help.

Confirm your follow-up plan before leaving. Follow-up scans cost R800 and are charged separately from medical abortion packages.

After contraception or other procedures

Follow the instructions provided for your specific treatment or contraceptive method. Ask when protection begins, whether additional contraception is needed, and what side effects or symptoms should prompt a call to the clinic.

Test results & follow-up appointments

Before leaving, confirm how and when you will receive your results and whether another appointment is needed. Contact the clinic if you have not received results within the timeframe given to you.

Keep your follow-up appointment and ask the team to explain any additional tests, treatment or costs.

When should I contact the clinic?

Contact the clinic if you are unsure about your medication, recovery or follow-up. After an abortion, seek prompt advice for pain or bleeding that is not improving, fever, flu-like symptoms, unusual vaginal discharge, or still feeling pregnant after about a week.

For severe pain, very heavy bleeding, fainting or feeling seriously unwell, seek urgent medical care. Do not wait for a WhatsApp reply.

Contact your clinic

For preparation, aftercare and follow-up enquiries, contact the branch providing your care. Ask for its available contact hours and after-hours arrangements.

From the moment I walked in, I felt completely at home. The receptionist warmly directed me when I was lost and also gave me a warm welcome when I arrived. Everyone I met in person made me feel comfortable and at ease. The genuine warmth throughout the entire experience allowed me to be myself and feel completely free. A special mention to Dr. Yolo, who was absolutely amazing! She made me feel so comfortable and understood that it felt like I was talking to my own sister. Her kindness, professionalism, and caring nature truly stood out. The entire environment is incredibly welcoming, and I can honestly say that I think I have found my new home. ❤️

I visited the place because I saw their reviews. I wanted to check what was causing my fertility issues. When I got to reception, the receptionist didn’t ask me what I came for. She just assumed I was there for something else. After some time, I was called in. That’s when I told the nurse what I came for. I was then taken to the doctor. He judged me for having fertility issues at such a young age. He told me to go to another building to get my blood results. As I was about to leave, the receptionist asked me to pay. I didn’t even know what I was paying for. I just paid 550 and left

I visited Fresh Start Clinic for a medical reason The doctor listened to my history and recommended different pills than what I used before, saying the side effects would be better. I was told to come back for a checkup on the 7th, mind you she choose the date for me , I was never asked if I could afford to come on the 7th. So to my understanding I don’t need to pay for it Cause after all it is a check up , to see how the pills she recommended for me actually treat me or worked . but it wasn’t made clear at the time if there would be a fee for it. I later found out the pills given have a lower success rate than the ones I had previously used. I wish costs and success rates had been explained more clearly upfront so I could make a fully informed decision. It should proves that they actual put money first and don’t get me wrong I understand they are a private facility, but for a person to pay for a check up who just visited the clinic not so long ago? That’s insane if you ask me and this was at Marshalltown ,
